Apple iPhones in 2018 will pack bigger batteries: KGI Securities
Apple is expected to launch three iPhones in 2018, two of which are said to sport an OLED display and one which will go with a traditional LCD panel. They are also expected to pack bigger batteries, as per KGI Securities analysts Ming-Chi Kuo. Like the iPhone X, the two OLED iPhones next year will sport the L-shape battery design to fit a larger battery, while the third iPhone is set to feature the same rectangular battery with a bigger capacity.
The unique L-shaped design allowed Apple to fit in not one but two batteries to make up one large 2716mAh battery, iFixit's teardown revealed last month. Kuo in his latest investor note wrote that the Cupertino giant will look to implement the design for its 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch OLED iPhones in 2018. He also predicts improvements to the battery technology that could increase the size further to somewhere between 2900mAh and 3000mAh. Apple has long been criticised for not improving the iPhone's battery. But the iPhone X's battery design suggests that the company is finally ready to make some breakthroughs in this department.
The new battery design lets Apple fit in a large battery in a small form factor, as it did with the iPhone X, which was needed considering it sports an OLED display. As Apple is expected to continue with OLED panels for future iPhones, improvements to the battery technology will be a necessity. Apart from the OLED display, Apple has also introduced a bunch of other technologies such as an array of sensors for its Face ID technology that are likely to consume more battery than any other iPhone before.
Separately, a report from Nikkei Asian Review this week suggests that among the three iPhones expected to launch next year, one of them will sport an LCD display and a metal body which will be more akin to older iPhone models. The iPhone is tipped to have a 6.1-inch screen and will retain the rectangular battery design so that it can come with a lower price tag. The other two models will sport iPhone X-like bezel-less designs with OLED displays. Kuo has also predicted that all the three iPhones as well as iPad Pro models in 2018 will feature Face ID.
